Einstein \u201creplied in his characteristic, humorous manner (I translate from the German in which he used a rather uncouth word): <b>\u2018Why, if it weren\u2019t for this \u201cinternal illumination\u201d [consciousness] the world would be nothing but a pile of dirt!\u2019<\/b>\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Freddie&#8217;s emphasis.
